The little boy sings as he scours the kitchen cabinets, the refrigerator, the counters for food, and finding none, leaves dejected.
I saw this ad early this morning from Feeding America, and I just burst into tears. This isn’t something new, it’s not something I didn’t know about. I’ve been advocating food programs for years. Of course, the hardest hit are always the children.
1 in 6 children go hungry in this country. The United States is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. This is utterly inexcusable. It is *shameful*. We can do something about it.
Some of those sites above are international sites, because while I am most disgusted with the U.S. at the moment, it isn’t the only one where children needlessly go hungry. To step away from flowery language for a second, I’d just like to say children going hungry in a first world nation is nothing short of fucking bullshit.
Not a single child should go without a meal in any of these countries, and that they do means there is a serious flaw in our social systems, in our governments, in us. We must remedy this immediately, until not a single man, woman, or child, goes without a meal.
